Why I Built Guardian Landlord
(And Why It Took 10 Years)

Ten years ago, I became a landlord by accident.

I wasn't chasing a real-estate empire. I ended up with a property, a tenant, and not much of a clue what I was doing. I was too scrappy to hand eight to ten percent of the rent to a property manager — but I also wanted something they couldn't really give me anyway: the ability to genuinely unplug. To leave for a while and trust that things back home were handled.

The trip that wouldn't let the idea go

Right before a trip to Thailand, I went looking for something — anything — that would let me step away from my rental for a couple of weeks without it following me across the world. I also needed to know my tenants would not need to coordinate and pay for maintenance out-of-pocket. I searched, and I came up empty. Nothing out there did what I actually needed.

That feeling stuck with me long after the trip ended. And through many more adventures to come. Being the only person who could make a call, coordinate with my tenants, and pay - while being around the world on a spotty connection - never gave me the peace I needed to recharge.

A decade of almost building it

I work in technology, so of course I tried to build it myself. More than once, actually. But I never quite had the time — or the complete skillset — to pull it all off on my own. Every attempt stalled somewhere in the gap between what I could picture and what I could actually ship.

Everything has changed recently, however. AI has bridged my knowledge gaps, more waking hours each day due to the little peanut shown below (send caffiene please 😅), the most supportive wife (also pictured below 😍), and a reinvigorated passion to build..all of this resulted in a product that I'm proud of!

Along the way, something else clarified for me. My background is in customer service and enterprise technology, and I've always believed that the intersection of those two — together with faith — is exactly where a genuinely helpful, trustworthy online company gets built.

And honestly? I never imagined it would turn out this capable. Or be this fun — at least as fun as a maintenance platform can be. 😝

I don't know what I don't know

I built Guardian Landlord to solve a problem I was living with. But I'm one landlord with one point of view, and I'm very aware that I don't know what I don't know.
